DAISY LOWE
WELL...I could not have asked for a more spectacular or special night. When my mum and I sat down with Red Bull to create my dream 21st I never imagined we would create something so amazing. We created so many fun memories, I loved every second.

The theme was "the enchanted and mythical wonder" and everyone made such an effort - it was a feast for the eyes! Most people hired costumes from this AMAZING place called Prangsta and we had elves, lions, water spirits, tree nymphs - everything! I had two beautiful costumes - my first, from Prangsta was like an ice queen which I wore to dinner and then a bespoke creation I worked on with Kate Halfpenny for the party.

The House of Fairytales curated the evening with games in between our amazing feast at the beautiful Babington House, there was an incredible rap featuring my friend Siobhan and Toby Kebbell (RocknRolla/Control). Then my mum played a video montage of me as a kid which was so sweet, if a bit embarrassing!

The music was fantastic - Jack Rabbit Slim, a great rock-a-billy band then my friend Twiggy Garcia DJ'd - the whole room was jumping up and down to Rage Against The Machine - I loved it!
All in all a night I will never, ever forget.
- this, sadly is DAISY LOWE'S account of her 21st birthday party. is it just me, or did anyone else spend their 21st in a dodgy club in Limerick doing red colored shots in a bad dress? wow, makes me nostalgic for the good oul days of throwing up outside a nightclub after all your friends bought you a drink....
article from vogue.com
Right, enough is enough. I would never normally write about, the hills or the city. Because A- I’ve never watched it and B- I don’t even have a TV. But, there comes a time when you have to put your dislike for bottle blonde dolly birds aside and limber up your laptop for a good oul bitch….
I recently viewed the surgery of Heidi Montag with interest.
Everyone was very quick to jump on the bandwagon of ‘Oh god she ruined herself’ and ‘She’s only 23!’ and I agree. Where as she was generically beautiful before. But she had a natural prettiness.
Following 10 surgeries in one day where she had Liposuction, breast lift and implants, botox, a nose job, buttock implants (WTF!), ear pinning and thigh implants (again WTF?) and here comes the worst part, she spent $30,000 on it and ended up :
Looking 20 years older, a bit more then freaky and like something you would not want to meet down a dark alley by the george on a friday night.
Her breasts look like they could kill a small child.
Anyway, It says a lot about the society we live in that this can be considered normal. In fact Grazia jumped on the bandwagon and wrote a great article about some 20 somethings they dug up somewhere who are all having surgery. Now I am in agreement concerning surgery if there is something seriously wrong. You need to have something reconstructed, you had a accident, you get the idea. Then surgery is a great idea.
But not when your 23 and not a minger before hand exactly and you spend stupid money to make yourself look like a 40 something year old housewife.
Only one person in one magazine seems to be asking themselves the question that came to my mind. What kind of a surgeon does this to a young girl? This screams of surgery obsession! I know it a recession where every little counts (well, he/she lives in LA and works as a surgeon, he wont starve) but seriously? Allowing one person to have 10 surgeries in one day ? did someone not pull her aside and ask questions? Where are this girls friends ? her mother? Her husband pratt? (I LOVE that this girl has a husband I can call pratt. The headline jokes write themselves)
Not one person turned around and said, your beautiful the way you are. Don’t change?
see the above photo? yeah, not a minger before right?
A girl never forgets her first piece of designer. It may be the thrill of the bag on your shoulder bearing the store name or the thrill of knowning it did in fact cost that much. But most of the time it’s the thrill of knowing you are right on trend.
For most girls, the first bit of designer we all try is the designer sunglasses. A less expensive affordable piece of designer luxury.
It is worthwhile spending a bit extra on a pair as they do promise to help protect our eyes from the sun, more so then your average primark pair. I remember my own. Smooth classic black wayfarers. (I had a Bob Dylan obsession that would not quit that summer) and I strolled in Brown Thomas. While my own look is obsessed with wayfarers now. (and yes, closet clubmaster wearers, I have tried them and prefer wayfarers)
So when Brown Thomas asked me to come and view the collections for the spring summer, I jumped at the chance. (In fact strolling up the Dublin streets I felt a little more then 007 on a mission) I was not disapointed. Giddy as a school girl on a sugar rush I pawed my way through style after style. Logos jumped out at me, Prada, Gucci and Dior, OH MY!
As always Brown Thomas remains the best place to see all the new styles and enjoy some selections which are not advailable just anywhere such as Victoria Beckham and Rock and Republic. Some of the styles are advailable already but a few shall be hitting stores soon in March 2010.
In the end, as always, my heart was promised to a pair of ray bans. So enjoy kids, here is the Miss Penny dreadful guide to summer sunglasses…….
Ray ban – This was the best collection we viewed. Brown Thomas are now featuring a selection of amazing wayfarers. Special edition glasses with floral designs in bright colors and graphic subways printed glasses. Ray bans are classics. To me they stand for statement. Rebellion. Punky alternative creative attitude. They also remind me of Bob Dylan which is great as he is amazing. The fantastic limited edition prints are edgy and modern and a fantastic twist on the classic ray ban. We were also delighted to see the reissue of the clubmaster. Readers of the blog will note previous articles we wrote on our adventure into the world of clubmasters, but the new clubmasters are no longer block colors but a more graphic striped style which as of now will be perminatly added to the ray-ban collection. Hurrah!
The clubmaster dominated celebrity sunglass style last summer but, I expect that this year, the subway printed glass will take off.
Featuring a print of a map of New York’s subway these glasses were my pick of the collection. Advailable now with the subway print on the inside or outside of the frame. Personally, I prefer it on the outside of the frame. It’s more of a statement piece. The best part about way farers and clubmasters (oh my!) is that they are very affordable. €130 for a limited edition pair. In my opinion. Well worth it.
Versace – Quite a colorful change from some of the darker lines on display. The 80’s influence stood out immediately. Bursting forward with some serious aqua, raspberry and purple shades. Mainly circular styles. Versace had an extremely strong presence and would definatly not be for the faint of fashion! These are highly fashion forward and create quite a strong look. Circular styles can be difficult to pull off if your like me, have a round face. But those with a pointed, heart shaped or oval face can carry a circular glass quite well.
Our pick would definatly be the intense blue glasses. Totally biased as blue is one of my hottest colors for the next season. It also looks great on blondes (being that I am blonde this works quite well for me) I chose the ones which are slightly more square as they are easier to work on a rounder face.
Tiffany’s – Exclusive to Brown Thomas I instantly loved two pieces in the collection. First of all, I loved the small Tiffanys charms which are advailable to change on the side of the glasses. A small detail but very elegant but showcase Tiffany’s attention to detail. I also loved the mint green shade on the frames. Three different charms are advailable. A heart, A T and a Tiffany logo. Given that mint green nail varnish was one of the biggest trends of last season ( that chanel nail varnish anyone?) I am not ready to see it go yet. I loved the fresh spring appeal of the green. It instantly updated quite a traditional circular lense. Bringing it into 2010. The line seemed very feminine and quite delicate. Definatly a must have for those who are looking forward to the candy colors of S/S10 as shown on the catwalks of Burberry and Valentino.
Our pick is already mentioned above. The mint green. Pure elegance.
Stella Macartney – Modern metallics sit comfortably on a distinctive collection organised in 5 catagories after 5 zodiac signs, Gemini, Leo, scorpio, Libra and Virgo. Flat visor styles featured strongly in the collection. Aviators are given a modern metallic edge making a very contemporary collection.
Any item from the collection has a luxiourious and timeless factor. It will never date. This is truly a collection you can rewear season to season. A truly classic style.
Our pick was the classic bug eyed style in the bright turquoise. A girl needs a bright color injection every now and again!
Prada - Never mind the devil. I wish I wore Prada. Even more so after viewing the beautiful line advailable from Brown Thomas for S/S10. Prada to million including myself will always mean a classic style. Something which will never go out of fashion, never look dated or tired. And I am happy to report the new line is every bit as iconic as Prada have always been. Classic circular styles in black are advailable in a lighter blue or ruby shade allowing for a style to fit every outfit and every character. Even a yellow aviator advailable for the more fashion conscious and daring amongst us.
Our pick of the collection was easy to make. The yellow aviators really stood out. Maybe it’s that here at the site we are attracted to brightly colored items but, I think in the midst of a recession, we could all use a little lift and a little light in our lives. These aviators are the way to do it. Classic 80’s style with a twist of citrus fresh yellow thrown in, given that yellow featured on the catwalks in the works of Marc Jacobs and Versace to name a few, it’s one shade set for S/S domination.

Dolce and Gabbana - Dolce and Gabbana styles seemed quite classic on first glance. It took a second glance for me to appreciate the craftsmanship that went into developing such a fantastic range. Each pair seems to be an iconic style which has been taken in 2010 with a modern twist. Think the type of glass a modern Audrey Hepburn would have worn had she had the choice in 2010. Aviators are made chunky, circular styles are given D&G trademark logos, and visor sports styles featured heavily. Some beautiful colors with the raspberry purple standing out strongly admist the black aviators and white visors. The attention to detail in the line was incredible. It is certainly a collection which attracts both the high glamour loving lady and the every day need to wear a sunglass which is actually functional.
Our pick is a strange one. We quite loved the circular / square glasses. Sounds odd right? It’s not, I can assure you. While quite a unique style they are certainly show stopping and different. Prehapes the more fashion forward lady with fashion nerves of steel. These are not for the faint of heart. They demand a high heel, a statement coat and the determind look of ‘fierce.’
Chanel – You know it instantly. That shortens of breath, that feeling of dizziness. The ‘chanel effect.’ That feeling of excitement when you can see the interlocking double CC’S famous as the chanel logo. Chanel is one of the most iconic brands that you instantly do not need to be told anything about. Beautiful, elegant and classic are words that come to mind when discussing chanel. (most of the time with bated breath) This season, chanel focused on designing a tweed effect on the glass frames. The effect took 18 months to develop. While chanel is famous for tweed suits, bags and of course her two toned shoes (amongst a whole host of other amazing fashion inventions too numerous to name here) developed in 1957, the effects have been carefully added to her glasses. Who can forget the amazing circular glasses from last season worn by Mary Kate Olsen and Nicole Richie with the fade from black to clear on the lense? This season, the fade has switched to the frame. Black and white frames with the iconic logo appearing on the side of the glasses.
Chanel also loved ribbons and bow. So at the side of the glasses there is a bow featured almost as if a metallic ribbon has been tied with the logo present. This was an amazing collection.
Our pick was the hardest thing to do. We could not choose. I think it was possibly the tweed effect glasses. I love the fact that someone had to work for 18 months to produce such a beautiful effect. It just proves how dedicated Chanel are, as a brand to preserving Coco Chanels brand vision. Which in 2010 in a campaign headed by one, Lilly Allen is just as relevant as ever.
We love a bit of fashion espionage. So when an invite to the inner sanctum of Irelands fashion arrived in the inbox, we simply could not refuse. So donning our best long black coat (the one with the amazine statement shoulders) we set off into the head offices of Brown Thomas for a sneaky peek at their new sunglasses collection. And we were blown away.
It is easy to forget how important a good pair of sunglasses actually is. Ray-ban for example have been making sunglasses since 1937 and have special lenses to absorb UV and infrared rays. So have made sunglasses for that long, they know what their doing. But a pair of sunglasses can also be an outfit maker or breaker. It is easy to wear the wrong shape for your face shape or the wrong color for your outfit. Which is why it is a good idea to drop into the store and actually try a few pairs on. It’s also a great way to inject a little designer into your life without the expense of an entire outfit. Experiement with the differnet styles and believe us, we saw everything from Versace to Prada to DVB and back again. Being in style for 2010 Spring Summer has never been so easy.
Miss Penny Dreadful would like to say thank you to Brown Thomas for inviting us and allowing us to view the collections. All images are from Brown Thomas. Thank you!
