World AIDS day 2011

Tommorow (or today - I've just seen the time!) is World AIDS day. It is important we remember the people we have lost and the people who are suffering with AIDS today.
Its one of the reasons that I am glad I work for a company which are so fantastic about raising money for such a good cause. Tommorow, MAC employees will be carol singing outside Brown Thomas in Dublin to raise money from 12 -5pm.
You can find a complete list of events here : World AIDS day events
Miss Penny Dreadful will also post a red ribbon for the week in support. I will also be wearing my ribbon at work along with my World AIDS day tattoo tommorow! Which I am quite excited about!

FASHION HISTORY : The New Romantics

The New Romantics

The new romantics were a pop culture movement which started in the late 70s as a response to the punk music which had begun to peak in that era although it borrowed elements from glam pop. I think that it borrows from both - its punk combined with disco which was another big movement during the 70s. The New Romantic movement, which has seen a revival in our recessionary times, was marked by outrageous make-up, flamboyant clothing and new wave pop music.
We often associate bands such as Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants and Culture Club with the movement, fashion wise it was all about maintaining a look which was outrageous using make-up in wild colors all over the face and body, frilly shirts, quiffs, mullets and crimped hair.
Pop stars such as David Bowie who performed at the time as Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars heavily influenced the look and magazines such as I:D began to document the street style by photographing the young kids they saw attending clubs in London such as Blitz, which was run by Steve Strange. The competition amongst the clubbers to wear more flamboyant clothing was fierce, much like our club scene today really. Famously, Strange denied entrance to Mick Jagger!
The movement fell in decline after 1985 the same year as the Live Aid concert as many viewed the movement as becoming too over the top it eventually faded away by the late 80s as bands like the smyths became popular. New Romanticism entered fashion, as all good street trends eventually do and was said to be the inspiration behind Vivienne Westwood's famous 1981 pirate inspired fashion show. The show, her first was designed with Malcom McLauren, who worked with a few of the more high profile New Romantic bands of the era.
I think in recent times we have seen a revival as it has once again become popular to experiment with clothing and make-up as part of a regular night out. However I think that instead of it being localised to one particular scene, it is more wide spread. I wrote about this two years ago at the height of the recession in THE magazine as I examined clubs like SPY who ran club nights like WAR which in its original day were filled with frilly shirts, outrageous make-up and insane clothing. Interestingly enough the two decades have something in common - both were suffering from a serious recession. The recession in Ireland during the 80s was almost identical to what we have today and the UK was no better. Funnily enough, recession breeds creativity and new ways of thinking.
It is interesting that the two recessions have brought about new approaches to fashion and clubbing.
I think one of the best examples of New Romantic fashion can be seen in the 2011 movie, 'Worried About the Boy.' With stars Douglas Booth as a young boy George starting out on the scene in the 1970s. The film, which features clothing by Vivienne Westwood and make-up by Illamasqua make-up artist Christine Bateman. Bateman is one of the best make-up artists you could possibly get to provide make-up for the movie as she was not only a new romantic in the day, but she knew Boy George, Steve Strange and the nightclubs! She talks about her experiences :
'I lived it. My nickname was Skunk! I had this stripe of blonde on black. I was a cross between a Mod and a New Romantic; backcombed to death and drenched in make-up: lots of kohl, a beauty spot and all that. Body art was massive back then.'

'We [Christine, her sister Nicola Bowery, Boy George, Steve Strange, Marilyn et al] used to go to all the nightclubs; The Blitz, Billy’s, Taboo – the nightclub owned by Leigh Bowery [legendary designer/performance artist/actor/singer/model who heavily influenced the 80s and 90s London and New York art and fashion circles, which included the likes of Alexander McQueen, Lucian Freud, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and numerous Nu-Rave artists]. It was all one big party scene and a creative hotbed of ideas. It was all about the fashion and the fun.'

Sometimes I take the night off.....

Me enjoying a nice long island iced tea after a hard days work! Notice the nails - a combination of mint green with a beige trim!

Kate for French Vogue - a must have!

How epic is this? Kate Moss as Ziggy Stardust for French Vogue....oh god I am so giving that make-up a go! A flawless bases and no eyebrows....thats my Saturday look done!

Motorcycle jackets

Never mind the fact that its on a man - I am WEAK for this jacket. I am in the market for a new leather jacket since mine is starting to look a bit worn down and this fits the bill nicely.
It's €203 from Viparo Clothing which you can find here : Brando Jacket and it's described as their Marlon Brando jacket.  I just love the way it nips in at the waist. Swoon.
It was inspired by the 50s movie, 'The Wild Ones' where Brando has a similar jacket to play a motorcycle outlaw. I just think this would look wonderful in my wardrobe since I frequently look like a 1950s motorcycle outlaw's wife...

Vintage weight GAIN adverts

It is hard to imagine in this day and age that there was a time when women were encouraged to be heavier, but there was. We are constantly told through advertising, editorial, articles and healthy eating campaigns that bigger is not better and we should strive to become smaller. Now, I have nothing against health and if your size is not healthy then yes, weight loss. But it goes both ways - there are skinny women who are just as unhealthy as larger women. However back in the 1940s they had much stranger reasons for wanting to put on a bit of weight - so men would look at them.
If we think of the 50s we think of full figured curvy women like Marilyn Monroe and the hourglass figure. Large full skirts nipped in by a tiny waist. It does seem incredible that women would pay for something that could be potentially dangerous in order to gain weight.
It seems sad that we are never allowed to just have the figure we have without being mad to feel bad about it. We are constantly bombared with imagery and articles telling us to diet, loose weight, hide this and flaunt that, we never get a chance to just enjoy our bodies for whatever shape they are. I have made the point that there are unhealthy shapes where your size, be it small or large, is actually putting your life in danger which is a different matter entirely, but can't we just enjoy what we have? it seems women have spent generations being told that we are too fat or too thin. There appears to be no inbetween according to advertisers or magazines.
The image here is very small but the right column is kinda scary - it offers a series of tonics, emulsions and pills which are called 'Wate - on'  and promise to help you gain weight in four days. I would love to know what was in them that they could promise something like that - pure lard?!?!

I googled the product and while I can't find any ingredient lists, I did find a whole host of bloggers who were clearly as confused as I am! Weight gain tablets!??! I also found adverts from the 1960s, so clearly women were buying these tablets, etc.  They claim to help women gain 4 - 30 pounds!!!! Could you imagine it?? The reason women wanted to bulk up was because of superstars such as Marilyn Monroe (who was a size 16 in her day) and Raquel Welsh (who actually advertised the product at one point) who all had curvy and full figures. Although in saying that Hepburn had a small waif like body, so who knows!

The Icon Collection from Turquoise Flamingo

I was lucky enough to get a sneaky peek at the new Icon collection for Turquoise Flamingo, Cork's best loved vintage shop! The collection will launch tonight at the Pavilion Bar with a vintage fashion show, Djs, cake and champagne - which sounds like fun!
It's inspired by two of the most fashionable ladies of all time - Brigette Bardot and Audrey Hepburn. Both of which were legends in their time. I can't decide which I prefer more, the Bardot dress or the Hepburn....I think it might be the black and white collared dress.
You can pick up a free invitation to the event from the shop on Washington Street or the Pavilion, but Turquoise Flamingo is also a treasure chest of vintage pieces stocking everything from accessories to shoes to clothing for both men and women. I always take the time to have a quick rummage through the rails every time I'm on my way home. (yes home - I'm based between Galway, Cork and Dublin right now!) The best part about TF is that while they stock amazing vintage - it is at affordable prices.
I think vintage in some areas can loose the run of itself and become completely outrageous with their prices but TF has been keeping it real for some time now. It's been a welcome addition to Cork's high street and lets face it, Cork was in desperate need of somewhere fantastic to go vintage shopping. I would love to see the same happen for Limerick, which also needs more vintage now that Nightingale and Rose has closed down. Anyway, if you fancy seeing the collection in full then it all takes place in the Pavilion bar tonight at 9 until 11.30!

WHATS ON : Vintage in Cork!

It's all very exciting! Cork's best kept vintage secret, Turquoise Flamingo and Le Chat Noir are launching their Icon Collection in the Pavilion tommorow night.
The collection which is a series of dresses based on vintage inspirations such as Audrey Hepburn and Brigette Bardot will be showcased in a fashion show due to take place at 9pm. There will be champagne, music and red velvet cupcakes to celebrate the evening of glam vintage fashion!
You can pick up your free invite from the store on Washington Street in Cork or in the Pavilion bar.

Why would you do that to your hair!??!?!?!?

Kate Hudson has described how she and Stella McCartney laughed about the complete disaster her 2001 golden globes dress was. To be fair, I agree with their statements - it wasn't the dress - its the awful poodle hair!!!!!

''Stella dressed me for my first red carpet event in 2001 for the Academy Awards. It was my first and only nomination. I was 21-years-old and to have Stella McCartney dressing me - well I felt like the hippest, coolest girl in the world. Up until the last minute Stella was working away, hand-sewing the hem. I woke up the next morning in my bed post-awards and without a little statuette on my bedside. I turned on the television to find out I was on every Worst Dressed list possible. So I called Stella and we just laughed our arses off and she said to me, "Look babe, it was the hair wasn't it?"

In a word - yes. Yes it was the hair.....

H&M announce new collection for Spring with Marni!

It seems as if it was yesterday that H&M announced the Versace link up but they have already secured their next fashion collaboration, and no, it's not Tom Ford!

H&M have announced they will partner with Marni next to produce a Spring Summer collection. Between this and the new Versace line (yes that is a round two) that are due to hit in Spring I predict riots and broke people - including myself!

The collection is said to be typically Marni with bold colors, mixed patterns and bright colors - all perfect for clashing and color blocking. It seems as if it's going to be one of the most exciting Spring high street collections! Huzzah! Marni are hoping that the collection will speak to the younger generations and appeal to a wider audience - if that purple polka dot suit hits Dublin then I predict just that happening.

While there is no launch date as of yet for the collection but you can get excited for it by watching the below clip :

Watch out for Tim Blank and his cameo!

With the pieces due to be sold in 260 stores including cropped trousers, pleated skirts and accessories, which collection are you more excited about ?

Vote for your fave collection in the poll on the side bar!

_______UPDATE_____________

Word just in that the collection is due to hit stores on March 8th! Happy shopping kids! Oh and incase the men are worrying about being forgotten - there will be a menswear collection too!

WHATS ON : Galway

I love hearing about things happening locally because sometimes it can feel as if everything happens in Dublin! I was delighted to hear about the upcoming bar boot sale in the Bierhaus in Galway.

The bar boot sales have been popping up all over Ireland with sales in Cork (Pavillon), Limerick (Bakers) and Dublin (Rua). It's great to see alternative shopping ideas really taking off around the country. It does get a little repetitive when you see Topshop clad women shopping the same old high street every payday. I am delighted that the recession has encouraged shoppers to get creative and has given us an incentive to think about what we buy. In recent years there has been a much more conscious move to replace the drudgery of the high street with a wave of vintage, second hand (or pre-loved!) and recycled goods which is not only good for our style - but our planet too! There is nothing better then the buzz you get from someone complimenting your really great vintage find!

Anyway, if you need an incentive to shop (and lets face it, if your reading this blog then you clearly don't!!) then what better incentive then the knowledge that you are supporting Enable Ireland who benefit from the Xmas Bar Boot stalls. Then there is all the usual bar boot wonderfulness - clothing, vintage, christmas jumpers, cupcakes, mulled wine and vinyls to name a few. There is even face painting for the little ones, Wii games on the big screen and Connect 4, which makes it a perfect afternoon for everyone in the family... Plus one of the best parts of the bar boot sale is that it's indoors!!!! So you get all the fun of a car boot sale - but indoors!

I am excited about the possibility of vinyl and vintage clothing - but then I'm always on the hunt for both! I will be heading down to the Bierhaus to take photographs of great style on the day as well, so dress to impress because you never know - you could end up on here!!!!

And if your wearing a Christmas jumper - you totally will!!!!! (You have been warned!)

Check out the facebook page if I haven't done a good enough job of convincing you!

XMAS GIFT IDEAS : Small Novelty Gifts

I hate when you have to get small little presents to go along with larger more awkward presents - which is exactly where I am right now. Shopping for little bits to go alongside larger presents which cannot accurately do the job by themselves. Sucks to be me! Anyway, this is where iwantoneofthose comes in! It's got everything you could ever want, not want or wish to inflict on others! For this section, I decided to concentrate on gifts for under €15. So I found these : starting with the love heart nightlights, which by the way are also being sold in Dunnes for around ten euro!
Or prehaps you wish to make a statement with blood bath shower gel? Or the Xmas bin bags below?
Or the on the run passport notebook?

heh heh heh

I had a quick smile at the Harper Baazar Top 20 Best Dressed list, not only did Kate Middleton beat Florence and the Machine but she also beat Kate Moss who came in at number four. This however was not the reason for my giggle, it was the fact that HB managed to get a slightly bitchy quote off Philip Treacy to describe her style.

'Kate has a 'Tesco' spirit and attitude about fashion - in other words, she makes it accessible to everyone. She is simply the queen of fashion.'

So Kate is a global brand which is slowly taking over the world with it's cheap goods, crap clothing and repetitive look?

Nice one Mr Treacy!

burds

One thing that drives me mad during the fashion weeks is not being able to take it everything at once. It's often a few weeks later that I find shows that I hadn't noticed before. I noticed the above image and instantly had to track it down, I eventually found out that the designer is Manish Arora and this is the SS12 collection!
While birds have a tendancy to remind me of Alexander McQueen, I liked that another designer wasn't afraid to use when but to put in color! MCQ could be a bit dark sometimes. I seem to be leaning towards color and fun collections at the moment!

Its great to have a little bit of silliness isn't it?

Finger nail piercings....

I recently read something random on someone's blog about nail piercings and it took me to age 15 when I used to pierce my nails. I didn't realise at that age that people with pierced nails were wearing fake nails and piercing your own talons was a stupid and dangerous thing to do.
I had longer healthier fingernails then and I could actually pierce them! I used to stick nails and earrings through them until I made a hole then stick really small hoops through them. I cringe now thinking of the risk I took because you can split your nails all the way up. Shudder. I do love piercings and I love my nails but I would never ever do that again!
Besides I think it was something I had seen in a Janet Jackson video - which is never good....

Congrats

Congratulations to Lilly Allen who had a baby girl this morning!

sheeps

I found this image of a sheep jumping and thought it was cute....no other fashion related reason for it being here...

RETAIL IN CRISIS : Arcadia announce 250 closures

Dangerous sign of the times here : Arcadia is to close 250 stores.

For those of you who don't know who Arcadia are, let me remind me : Topshop, Topman, Wallis, Evans, Miss Selfridge, Burton and Dorothy Perkins. Philip Green has confirmed that there will be closures but has yet to announce where the closures will take place and with what brand.

The closures come after Arcadia reported a 40% drop in profits this winter with Green insisting that new opportunities will arise in the meantime but for now out of the 540 stores with leases waiting to be renewed, only 250 will remain. '"We have got - from my memory - 450 or 460 stores where leases expire in the next three years, and I think on our latest summary we will close more than half of those on lease expiry. So I would say, I would expect us to close 250, 260. Now, there may be other opportunities that turn up that we might want to open. But certainly, in terms of our existing portfolio, currently that's our thinking.''

'"It's been the hottest October and November in history, nobody can deal with that. Winter goods are tough. Trading conditions remain extremely challenging, with style, quality and value at the top of our agenda and more important than ever. I do believe everybody today is more financially aware than they've ever been in their life."

Yes, we are financially aware and yes it is challenging out there - but maybe some of us just got sick of being charged the unbelievably high prices that Topshop seem to think its okay to charge for basic high street goods. I don't believe the UK realise how expensive Topshop is in Ireland! You don't want your business to drop by 40%? Then lower your prices like the rest of the high street has done! It's funny, Urban Outfitters, who also haven't lowered prices, are also reporting a drop in sales....hmmm....

THE DREADFUL DIARIES : Sleeping for the last few years!

I have been asleep since eight yesterday! I do however have a very good reason for needing my beauty sleep - I graduated on Friday! Anyone who has been through a graduation knows how much hard work they are - from choosing the dress, getting to the venue to making sure everyone arrives in one piece!
I had parents and friends to co ordinate so it was a bit intense!
I really didn't think I would make it to this point! I was so happy to pass and get my marks and for everything to work out perfectly. I am just surprised it did! I decided last minute not to wear a dress as well, I chose a black skirt, cream blouse and a purple cape with pink shoes. A bit of a color overload but I loved it. I switched into a T-shirt to join the girls at Cafe En Seine later on.
I promise photos but I have to wait to get my camera fixed! I am exhausted however and experiencing a bit of a 'now what' moment! It's a big thing to graduate because it means the end in a chapter of your life. This chapter for me was college in Dublin which lasted for two years - I don't know what to do now! I'm currently in my 'gap years' mode which sees me working for a company I love in a city I like too. I want to stay for a while at least!
I have no intention of doing a PHD until I am 29/30ish which means I have a few years to sort out my life here! It's just a shame with the scrapping of postgrad fees in this country, that there is no way I can stay if I want to do it here.
I don't mind that too much though!

Lynx have their adverts banned.....

The British Advertising Standards Authority have done it again! They banned the third advert this month! But they do have a point with this one - Lucy Pinder for Lynx. 'We considered that the various activities that Ms Pinder carried out were presented in a sexually provocative way, and that alongside the focus on Ms Pinder’s cleavage … were likely to be seen as gratuitous and to objectify women. We considered that was emphasised by the text ‘Can she make you lose control?’ … and the invitation to ‘Play with Lucy’, which we considered would also be seen as degrading to women. We therefore concluded that the ads were likely to cause serious and widespread offense. We therefore considered that the poster would be seen to make a link between purchasing the product and sex with women and in so doing would be seen to objectify women.’
Good but, where have they been? This is how Lynx sell deodrant to men!!! They have made adverts like this for years. It's a bit late for a slap on the wrist now is it not?

SCREAM

Oh Mr Pugh, I do believe...IT'S ON!!!!

XMAS GIFT IDEAS : For the person who loves dogs like family...

In my house, the dogs are considered part of the family. We have two border collies which are almost like family members. Which is all I am going to mention about my family and the dogs since I am still getting a slagging about the last time I mentioned my family on this blog. (Hi guys, I know NOW your reading this!) So as I found myself googling the answer to my fashion related pug question, I came across this Etsy website that specialises in dog cartoon prints, cards and, wait for it, CUT OUT DOG PUPPETS! Brillant!
It's really true that your either a dog person or a cat person. I say I love cats but I prefer dogs! I think it divides up a bit more then that though, I think your either a big dog person or a small dog person. In Ireland it is definately 'in Vogue' to keep a small dog like a jack russell or another small wiry haired breed. In the UK, I think we prefer larger dogs! Then again I am from the UK and brought up with various family members who kept border collies or golden retrievers so I am biased! However I am loving the 'Keep calm and love a corgi' print! We have had a corgi before and they are wonderful characters filled with personality - prehaps in the case of this corgi, a little too much personality for one household!
We all know someone though who is a little obsessive about their dog!!! I spent the last two days in part time company of two small dogs who have their own specially prepared meals in their own fridge - yes, you heard that right, their own fridge. Anyway, this is too much dog related talk so lets focus on who made these cards, puppets and prints shall we?
These are the works of Whitney Coleman, who trades under African Grey on etsy.com. She established her company in 2008 and is based in America, which means the prices on etsy are in dollars, but extremely well priced which means a great stocking filler, christmas card or printed present!
She also likes to use otters and mermaids incase you are the type of person who isn't into dogs and prefers your pet Ariel instead. Do check out her work here : African Grey
