BOOKCLUB : Fashion related reads
My mother gave me a copy of this when I was younger and I really enjoyed it. It's hard not to be impressed by her courage and her story. If your not sure who she is, then let me introduce Alek Wek - one of the coolest supermodels. She started her career in 1995 after fleeing Southern Sudan to escape civil war there. She writes about the journey she took escaping to Britain and how she became a model and now lives in America. Its hard not to be gripped by her story.
Fashion Babylon by Imogen Edwards Jones
There is a whole range of these Babylon books - I have to be honest, they are a little bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I enjoy the methods which IEJ goes to to collect information on various industries - its a journalist's way of doing so and I admire someone who can take such fact and gossip and mix them in such a way where a complete outsider can read the book and still enjoy it. Each time I read this - I find more information and things I missed the first time around. I reach for it everytime I am sick and I love that a good portion - and I do mean good portion of this, is actually true. It's also a fantastic way of explaining the inner workings of the fashion industry without boring someone to tears. Basically the book explores a period of time in a certain designers life while she prepares for New York Fashion Week. It's all totally anon though! No names mentioned - although many have been speculated on!
